What kind of glasses do we drink the different wines?
If it is possible, choose glass of colourless material (crystal) since it does not enter into reaction with the wine and its refraction is also good. Try to obtain glasses with thin wall since the thicker wall may have an influence on the temperature of the wine. The good tasting glass has long shaft of pencil thickness, so it is easy to hold.
The following types of glass should use for the different wines:
- To white and rosé wines use glass with the shape of a flowering tulip, i.e. with wider base and tapering upper part which concentrates the aromas and we can fell them more intensively. Hold the glass by its shaft to prevent that the drink warm up from our hand.
- To red wines use spherical glass because here the scents are less important than at the white wines. The red wine should spread in the bottom of the glass well: this is how we can concentrate on the colour. It is practical to let the red wine rest for a while so that its original balance is restored. When tasting red wines the spherical, wide glass is the best.
- To champagnes choose longer, trumpet-end like glass in which the sparkling of the drink can be observed best. Here the main evaluation criteria are the intensity and fineness of the sparkling, so the selection of the proper glass is very important.
